WEATHER SUMMARY FOR THE MIDSOUTH NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MEMPHIS TN 923 PM CDT FRI MAY 9 2008 A COLD FRONT IS CURRENTLY DRIFTING SOUTH ACROSS THE AREA AND WILL STALL OVER NORTHERN MISSISSIPPI THIS EVENING. A STRAY SHOWER OR TWO IS POSSIBLE MAINLY NORTH OF I-40. OTHERWISE...MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES AND ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS ACROSS THE ENTIRE MIDSOUTH. A STRONG UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM WILL BEGIN TO PUSH OUT OF THE PLAINS ON SATURDAY. THE ASSOCIATED SURFACE LOW WILL SLIDE TO THE NORTHEAST AND PUSH A COLD FRONT THROUGH THE AREA LATE SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING. NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL AFFECT THE AREA OUT AHEAD OF THIS FRONT LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING. SOME STORMS COULD BE STRONG TO SEVERE WITH LARGE HAIL... BRIEF HEAVY DOWNPOURS...AND ISOLATED TORNADOES. DRY HIGH PRESSURE WILL THEN BUILD INTO THE MIDSOUTH SUNDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH MONDAY WITH BREEZY CONDITIONS AND MILD TEMPERATURES. CHANCES FOR SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS RETURN TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY IN ASSOCIATION WITH ANOTHER AREA OF LOW PRESSURE THAT WILL PUSH NORTHEAST OUT OF TEXAS. $$

    Spotters Program
    SKYWARN is a program consisting of the National Weather Service's network of trained volunteer severe weather spotters. SKYWARN members consist of private citizens, amateur radio operators, firefighters, law enforcement officials, and other goverenment officials. SKYWARN volunteers support their local community and government by providing the National Weather Service with timely and accurate severe weather reports. In addition, SKYWARN spotters working with emergency management officials can help provide their communities with advance warning of impending hazardous weather.
    A R E S ::  Amateur Radio
    Emergency Service
    The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes. The only qualification, other than possession of an Amateur Radio license, is a sincere desire to serve. Because ARES is an amateur service, only amateurs are eligible for membership. The Shelby County A.R.E.S. meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Baptist Women's Hospital, 6225 Humphreys Blvd. Meetings begin at 6:45pm in meeting room A and usually run no longer than two hours
